We awoke opposite the cave dwelling town of Matera. So what is wrong with this town?
Italy
Dora’s headache and troglodyte living
We booked our ferry while on the Isole Eolie, we are leaving Italia in three days, but first Matera.
Sciara del Fuocco stays quiet
Today was our last day on Stromboli and we wanted to see the Sciara del Fuocco, the trail of fire, before we left.
Not in a mood for fireworks, but nonetheless fascinating
We leave Vulcano this morning, at 8.00am. We haven’t had time to have coffee and we still have sore bums from cycling. In a normal day, this would be a perfect combination for being moody. But we are going to Stromboli. The trip we have so looked forward to for years. So I embrace the day with a really big smile. Even Gary is impressed.
Suffering with pleasure
We have one more day on Vulcano island. We packed in so many things yesterday: we climbed the volcano, had a mud bath, walked around the central bit of the island, gone fishing… What’s left to do on this 21 sqkm island?
Vulcano vents
We are nearing our time in Italy, and just like in the UK when we visited Lundy near the end, so in Italy were we off to some islands, the Isole Eolie and first, Vulcano. Read more
Counting down the days
We are going over to the Aeonic Islands islands in two days time, where we will attempt to climb The Cratere and Stromboli volcanoes, the last two volcanoes out of four. This is a trip we have wanted to do for years.
Tawdry Taormina
Taormina was a mythical place from a loved film, but she could never live up to expectation.
Etna dominates
She is ever present, always on the horizon. Even when shrouded in cloud Etna dominates.
At last, Sicily
Our stay in Italy is gradually coming to an end. We have enjoyed every moment of it. We have loved the scale of the country; the rapid changing landscape; the warm and sunny days and also the non-stopping rainy days; the food; the wine; and, of course, the many hilltop towns. But the most exciting bits we have left to the end: Sicily, the Aeolian Islands and volcanoes.
