After the exertions of yesterday in the Black Mountains, I thought we might ache a little. No sign yet, but often this occurs the day after the day after. What we have planned for today is a little less vigorous, waterfalls, and lots of them. It is an area I have seen before, but will be new to Susana. What is it about waterfalls that are so enticing? The noise, the power, not sure, but big or small they are always amazing. We started in the morning with Henrhyd fall just outside the village of Coelbren. Dora is getting used to negotiating the narrow British lanes, with the odd bit of reversing to negotiate oncoming traffic. Other motorists seem very patient, can only guess what they really think about bringing a three ton truck down here!
Apparently Henrhyd is the highest fall in South Wales, and with all the recent rain it was flowing well. It was quite dark in the gorge formed by the waterfall, with the lush vegetation that prospered in the mist adding to the atmosphere.
You could almost get behind this fall, where the water had eroded an overhang.
After Henrhyd we got caught up behind a tractor rally, these people really know how to have a good time. Being Sunday we completely miscalculated the shops and the Lord’s day of rest, and after much traipsing around the countryside we eventually opted for the leftovers within Dora; hummus and onion bajis. As we were disgusted at the seven pound parking costs we opted to extend the walk and park at Ystradfellte.
The nine kilometre walk took just over three hours and circled four falls; Sgwd Clun-Gwyn, Sgwd-y-Pannwr, Sgwd Islf Clun-Gwyn and finally Sgwd-yr-Elra where you could properly walk behind, but in the process got soaked.
Nice pictures!! The fourth one scares me…
Why does it scare you, chicken?
It looks beautiful!
